Sintex vs RCC vs Underground Tanks: Which Needs Cleaning Most?

9 March 2026โ€ข5 min read

Not all tanks get dirty at the same rate. Compare how Sintex, RCC and underground tanks accumulate sludge and algae โ€” and how each should be cleaned.

Three tank types dominate Gujarat homes and buildings: Sintex (plastic), RCC (concrete) and underground sumps. They get dirty in different ways and need different handling. Knowing the difference helps you spot trouble early.

Sintex / plastic tanks

Light, cheap and everywhere โ€” but dark plastic on a sunny rooftop heats up and grows biofilm fast. The smooth inner surface is easy to scrub, so cleaning is quick, but the warmth means you should never stretch past six months.

  • Gets dirty: fast (heat-driven biofilm)
  • Cleaning difficulty: easy โ€” smooth walls, light to handle
  • Watch for: black slime on walls, sediment at the outlet

RCC / concrete tanks

Common for large rooftop and society tanks. Concrete is porous, so algae take hold in the corners and the rough surface needs proper scrubbing โ€” a rinse is not enough. Cracks can also let in contaminants, so cleaning is a good time to inspect.

  • Gets dirty: moderate, but holds algae stubbornly in porous corners
  • Cleaning difficulty: medium โ€” rough walls need thorough manual scrubbing
  • Watch for: green algae patches, hairline cracks, seepage stains

Underground sumps

The hardest-working and most contamination-prone of the three. Sumps collect sand and silt from the municipal line and sit in a confined space below ground, where a cracked lid or leaking joint invites dirt and insects. Cleaning needs draining, safe confined-space access and careful disinfection.

  • Gets dirty: high โ€” collects municipal silt and ground contamination
  • Cleaning difficulty: hard โ€” confined space, needs trained workers and safety gear
  • Watch for: silt layer, insects, musty smell, anything entering through the lid

The verdict

Underground sumps need the most care and the most caution. Sintex needs the most frequency-discipline because of heat. RCC needs the most thorough scrubbing. All three: every six months.

One method does not fit all

This is why a generic "tank wash" falls short. Each type needs the right tools โ€” soft scrubbing for Sintex, heavy brushing and inspection for RCC, and confined-space-safe equipment for sumps โ€” followed by the same non-toxic disinfection. Our partners are trained for all three.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which water tank gets dirty the fastest?+

Dark Sintex tanks in direct sun grow biofilm fastest due to heat, while underground sumps accumulate the most physical silt and face the highest contamination risk.

Is cleaning a concrete tank different from a plastic one?+

Yes. Porous RCC concrete needs thorough manual scrubbing to remove algae from rough walls, whereas smooth Sintex tanks are quicker to clean.
